Wooded residence with steep slopes and erosion control issues addressed with terraces, slope stabilization, low growing native plantings, rain gardens, and sheet flow areas. Woodland pathways, water features and native plantings complete the design.

    Wooded Residence with Steep Slopes
  • Elwell Studio was engaged to produce Construction Documents and Permitting for the front yard improvements. This entailed producing detailed impervious coverage and grading studies, and adjusting the design accordingly to meet all Township regulations.

Due to steep slopes and focused runoff onto the property, the land was being eroded and
it was very difficult to establish groundcover on the site. Our solution consisted of creating
terraces as well as a very aggressive slope stabilization that included erosion fabric and low growing
native plantings that would mitigate erosion through a dense root system. In addition,
we redirected runoff that was focused on the property to rain gardens and sheet flow areas; a
technique used to greatly diminish the erosive energy of the water.

Although this project had a specific goal of reducing erosion, we used this as an opportunity to create improved access and use areas throughout the property.  Design elements included walkways, plantings, and water features.
